Today I’m celebrating my 7th year of teaching yoga! Here are 7 things I have learned from practicing & teaching yoga these past 7 years.
1. Everything starts in the mind. The minute you allow your mind to be flexible, you give permission for your body to ease & to learn how to be flexible, too. No matter how much you train & study, you don’t know everything so BE TEACHABLE. Be willing to be imperfect. Approach each day like a beginner with an open flexible mind, & fresh new set of eyes & ears.
2. Your practice is not only your gift to god, but your practice is a mirror of your relationship with god.
3. If you practice yoga by leading with your ego & a competitive nature you might look great & have a tight ass, but you will run out of fuel. If you practice by leading with your heart, you will always have a steady stride, & uncover the depths of your soul.
4. When you start to practice yoga, you become the alchemist of your mind, body, & soul. This is why it is very important for you to not think you know everything & to learn the six systems of yoga or @ least what they are: Bhakti, Jnana, Raja, Hatha, Kriya, & Karma Yoga. You can practice one or all six because they all support each other, but do not get in the habit of thinking one is better than the other. That is ego trying to separate you from your brothers and sisters, trying to define and label who you are. You are a spirit, remember! Judging others and the way they practice or teach does not make you a better yogi, it just reinforces your asshole tendencies.
5. Make basking in discomfort your biggest goal; not only on the mat, but in life. That’s where true growth happens.
6. Yoga Teachers,No matter how many times you create a sequence 9/10 you will have to change the sequence. Change it up & remember “Less is always more.”
7. Protect your space, protect yourself, protect your practice. There is so much more, but I have to have some material for when I begin training new yoga teachers! Thank you to all my teachers, fellow yogis, clients & students! It is because of you & your desire to learn that I continue to learn & grow, & try to help where I am needed. Love you!
