Post 1/8: More than a Cup of Tea
Welcome to the beautiful tea estates of rural Assam. Here, the legacy of colonialism holds sway over the lives of a community of workers that comprise India’s 3rd largest workforce. Lack of access to opportunities across generations has meant that disproportionately few from this vast community have been able to access the freedoms of development.
In an unprecedented step, to empower themselves to access such freedoms, the tea-plantation and village communities of Selenghat have started coming together to build a peoples’ school. Welcome to Selenghat Valley School -- a school built by the people for the people!
Since the inception of Beli Ghar, the first classroom in January 2020, the school has withstood several challenges, key amongst which is the creation of a COVID adapted school system that is keeping 95% of its children positively engaged and learning. Having set a precedent for such positive community action, we are now motivated more than ever to scale the impact. We are looking to raise a total of at least INR 8 Lakhs to build three new classrooms.
