Posting for the first time in almost a year to let my friends know that my book A NEW PHILOSOPHY OF OPERA is now available from @liverightbooks ! Because everything I do is collaborative, it took a while to get used to doing something where I “stand alone” to express what I think about where opera is and where it’s going. I hope this helps both my fellow artists and the opera-curious discover a language for approaching what can be an unapproachable art form. While I’m critical of the exclusionary attitude that pervades so much opera, I ultimately advocate for an art form that is “unreachable — undefinable — ambiguous — indeterminate — transcendent — multitudinous — paradoxical” and that somehow, despite everything, can illuminate our inner lives. Link in bio to the Bookshop.org site but available everywhere — alongside an excerpt in last weekend’s NY Times.
