Every once in a while a man comes along—the kind you wouldn’t see coming- until he’s gone. His name was Shane Tyssen. You could overlook him so easily until you heard him speak. And then you were hooked for life. He was articulate, and crazy smart. Knew more about everything than I will ever know about anything. And at the same time, would sprawl on the floor like a kitten to learn in any moment. I loved him with a deep and sketchy love. And I still do.
Staunch atheist, vile sense of humor, made the best jokes at the worst times (my favorite kind)… He was MY kind of pagan. USDA grade savage.
I loved working with him because he was the best teammate you could ever have. Anticipating everything. Laughing at everyone.
I also loved talking about my faith with him because I think we both believed in the same thing. He was exclusively concerned with reality, and so was I. He had more light in him than most pastors… but you can only make great devils out of great archangels. And my man had a shadow side, and yes, it was very out of phase.
“You wouldn’t believe it even if i told you the lifetimes this man has lived” - dan
I echo this sentiment. With a canyon of reverb.
I once heard:
“Jesus is not loyal to nations, groups, battles or teams. He is only loyal to suffering” R.R.
And Shane suffered much. And for you my brother— The Christ I believe in, is in both hell waiting for you with a slayer t-shirt. And also with a slayer ‘onesie’ and a job offer as the maintenance man of heaven (buttons, not zippers)….
Either way, I’m all pearly gates tonight. And I hope I get to laugh with you again, in heavens woodworking shop, or in hell’s Nascar. I miss you. You magnificent bastard 😘.
