Istanbul is famous for its outsized cat population who you’ll find roaming free, keeping watch, and mingling with the humans. Meet the cats who rule the city.

By breakfast, the cats are already making the rounds. In Istanbul, they turn up in cafés, markets, bookstores, waterfronts and anywhere people gather.

Istanbul’s official visitor guide gives cats top billing and calls them the “Royalty of Istanbul.”

Istanbul’s cats are independent by design. Most don’t belong to one person, and they’re perfectly happy picking their own lookout points, routes and favorite corners.

Istanbul is often cited as home to one of the largest concentrated street-cat populations in the world.

If there’s a spot to claim, a cat has probably claimed it first. What’s ours is theirs.

Istanbul’s cats are professional photobombers. They show up in wedding photos, tourist’s shots, and plenty of camera rolls they weren’t invited into.

Istanbul helps take care of its street cats with veterinary care, vaccinations and dedicated “paw parks” where animals have space to play. Resist the urge to scoop one up and take it with you. Some have entire neighborhoods looking after them.

An entire film was made about the cats of Istanbul. According to the director, “The real soul of the city is actually, I think, the cats.”

Why are they so comfortable here? Because they’ve been here for centuries. They arrived on trading ships as far back as Byzantium, originally brought in to control pesky critters in cargo holds.

If you can swing it, travelling in the shoulder seasons is the way to go. I felt like I had @hideawaybluewaters to myself and I loved that for me. No line ups, no waits for anything.

Speaking of no waits - I have never attended a more ‘on-time’ resort in my life. When they said breakfast delivery at 8:30am, at 8:30am someone was knocking at my door with breakfast. The butlers were outside my room two minutes before I was expected at dinner (they escorted me which was really sweet as a solo traveller) and when we got there my table was ready for me. I was always served right away and so it seemed were the people around me.

The food is an easy 9.5 out of 10. I tried Calypso (Caribbean), Armadillo (Tex Mex) and Grazie (Italian) while I was there and each one went above and beyond in quality and flavour.

This resort is highly accessible for wheelchair users. I clocked ramps all the way down to the beach. If mobility is an issue you will be able to access whatever you want.

The beaches? Stunning. No notes. White sand, no rocks, clear water, beautiful waves.

Overall an incredible experience. I stayed at the family side in 2018. The adult side in 2026. Loved them both and will be back to experience either again 🇯🇲
