He was the one person who didn't want her to leave, yet he stood up in front of her entire family and defended her right to go. Sometimes the most romantic thing someone can do isn't saying "I love you." It's believing in you when the people closest to you don't. And Atypical Season 1 Episode 4, "A Nice Neutral Smell" (2017), gives us one of the most beautiful examples. Casey Gardner, played by Jack Haven, has just received an incredible opportunity. After breaking a school track record, she's offered a chance to attend the prestigious Clayton Prep, a school that could completely change her athletic future. But there's one problem. Her family isn't nearly as excited as she hoped. Her mother, Elsa, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, immediately worries about how Casey leaving would affect her brother Sam, portrayed by Keir Gilchrist. And suddenly, Casey's biggest achievement becomes another conversation about everyone else's needs. Then Evan Chapin, played by Graham Rogers, does something absolutely unforgettable. He stands up. "You have two kids." Four words that change the entire atmosphere. He reminds her parents that Casey broke a record, accomplished something extraordinary, and deserves the opportunity to pursue her dreams. But here's what makes this moment so special. Evan doesn't actually want Casey to leave. He knows attending Clayton Prep would mean spending less time together. Yet he still defends her future. No jealousy. No selfishness. No making her dreams about himself. Just genuine love and support. And that's what makes this iconic Atypical scene so powerful. Created by Robia Rashid and directed by Seth Gordon, this 2017 Netflix episode captures something incredibly important about healthy relationships. The right person doesn't make you feel guilty for growing. They celebrate your achievements, recognize your potential, and encourage you to become everything you're capable of being. Even when supporting you means making things harder for themselves. Evan didn't need an expensive gift or a dramatic romantic speech. He simply made sure Casey knew someone was on her side. Sometimes that's the greatest expression of love.
“I saw hacksaws, chainsaws, axes, and machetes. Everything was covered in blood.” Ukrainian military medic Yuriy Armash spent more than a year in Russian captivity, including in a torture facility established by Russian occupiers inside a police station in Nova Kakhovka. His testimony is horrifying. Russian FSB officers tortured him with knives, pierced his neck with an awl, and electrocuted him using a military field telephone until he screamed. As a medic, he was also forced to treat civilians who had been brutally beaten by Russian soldiers. He witnessed broken limbs, severe head injuries, and rooms filled with blood-covered torture instruments. Russian occupiers even cut tattoos they disliked from prisoners’ bodies or burned them off. Women were separated by age, taken from their cells at night, and raped. One of the victims was a 14-year-old girl. Armash noticed that she was bleeding and asked whether Russian soldiers had raped her. She silently lowered her head. After he promised not to tell anyone, she answered, “Yes.” This is what Russian occupation looks like. This is why Ukrainians are fighting. This is why surrendering Ukrainian territory to Russia is not peace. For millions of Ukrainians, it is a matter of life and death.
