Listening to the impeccably polished New Wave production and gargantuan singalong hooks of Chairlift’s second LP, it’s easy to imagine an alternate timeline where this record came out in 1986, ruled the pop charts with an iron fist, Chairlift won a few Grammys and a handful of these tracks are still regularly played at grocery stores alongside hits by Tina Turner and Roxette. In this timeline however, Something is suffice to be one of the absolute best ‘80s-inspired LPs from an era overflowing with them, and an essential precursor to the solo career of the immensely talented Caroline Polachek.
