• THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 01. SWANS - THE SEER RELEASED: 28 AUGUST 2012 PRODUCED BY: MICHAEL GIRA LABEL: YOUNG GOD COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: ART ROCK • EXPERIMENTAL ROCK • POST-ROCK • NOISE ROCK Michael Gira has been quoted as describing Swans’ sprawling masterpiece The Seer as “the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I’ve ever made” - and the self-awareness in this statement is undeniable. Swans’ resurgence in the 2010s still feels like some kind of miracle; a comeback that revealed itself to be an artistic renaissance for the band. A double album that’s monumental in both size and scope, The Seer earned Swans widespread critical acclaim and visibility on a larger scale than ever before. It’s an epic and intense adventure through the dark and vivid imaginations of its creators, and an unforgettably thrilling ride. What do you think? This is my pick for the best album of 2012 - what’s yours? • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 02. FIONA APPLE - THE IDLER WHEEL IS WISER THAN THE DRIVER OF THE SCREW AND WHIPPING CORDS WILL SERVE YOU MORE THAN ROPES WILL EVER DO RELEASED: 18 JUNE 2012 PRODUCED BY: FIONA APPLE • CHARLEY DRAYTON LABEL: EPIC COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: SINGER/SONGWRITER • ART POP • PIANO ROCK One of the most delightful aspects of being a Fiona Apple fan is that she just gets better and better with each subsequent album. A notorious perfectionist, Apple also takes her sweet time in readying new material for public consumption, and she’s always more than worth the wait. The Idler Wheel came seven years after 2005’s luscious Extraordinary Machine, and represents the single greatest evolutionary leap of her career so far. It’s all as perfectly eloquent and precise and knotty as its brilliant titular couplet would suggest - not a note or a word used in excess, not a note or word used in frivolity. Every element in its place with purpose and intention and meaning and it’s all assembled with a meticulous attention to detail. It’s a moment of artistic clarity from one of our most cherished modern musical geniuses - and her first genuine masterpiece to boot. What do you think? Memories? Favorite tracks? • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 03. DEATH GRIPS - THE MONEY STORE RELEASED: 24 APRIL 2012 PRODUCED BY: DEATH GRIPS LABEL: EPIC COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: EXPERIMENTAL HIP HOP • INDUSTRIAL HIP HOP • ELECTRONIC One still wonders if Death Grips actually shot their career in the foot or became true legends when they gave the finger to their burgeoning major-label contract with Epic in late 2012 by self-releasing NO LOVE DEEP WEB (with a dick on the cover, no less). I’m inclined to lean towards the latter option, but let’s not let the lurid backstory outshine what a brilliant record The Money Store - the sole major-label release from one of the most brazenly uncompromising musical acts of the century - actually is. There is a distinctly “pop” element to this LP that the band wouldn’t fully embrace again until 2016’s Bottomless Pit (their other masterpiece), and when Death Grips nail that balance between genre-crushing experimentation and hooky accessibility, it’s near-miraculous. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 04. TAME IMPALA - LONERISM RELEASED: 5 OCTOBER 2012 PRODUCED BY: KEVIN PARKER LABEL: MODULAR COUNTRY: 🇦🇺 GENRE: PSYCHEDELIC ROCK On his superb sophomore LP Lonerism, Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker didn’t stray far from the vividly psychedelic blueprint he established on 2010’s Innerspeaker, but he absolutely elevated the all-around quality from merely outstanding to unquestionably masterful. The wandering, unpredictable nature of some of these tracks may take a few listens to sink in, but once they get their hooks in you it’s a done deal - this is the sound of modern psychedelic rock perfected, and it’s a joy to behold. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 05. SCOTT WALKER - BISH BOSCH RELEASED: 3 DECEMBER 2012 PRODUCED BY: SCOTT WALKER • PETER WALSH LABEL: 4AD COUNTRY: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 GENRE: ART ROCK • EXPERIMENTAL • SINGER/SONGWRITER Scott Walker’s fourteenth and final solo studio LP is an absolute doozy. Rounding out his inimitable trilogy of late-period arthouse masterpieces (see 1995’s Tilt and 2006’s The Drift), no capsule review I could write could possibly do justice to this sprawling and accomplished artwork (it practically demands a full thesis), but I’ll try. Densely packed to the gills with vivid and unusual textures, poetry so erudite and thick with meaning you want to eat it with a knife and fork, and of course countless spine-tingling jump-scares (Walker‘s favorite late-period parlor trick), Bish Bosch gifts the listener with a thrilling mystery to unravel and a uniquely compelling challenge that is absolutely worth savoring. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 06. BEACH HOUSE - BLOOM RELEASED: 15 MAY 2012 PRODUCED BY: CHRIS COADY • BEACH HOUSE LABEL: SUB POP COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: DREAM POP • INDIE POP Another stunner from Beach House, their majestic and immaculately produced fourth LP Bloom still feels like a watershed moment for the band, as though they’d finally reached the artistic destination they’d been working towards since their eponymous 2006 debut. Their entire discography is wonderful, but Bloom feels even more assured, measured, complete - monolithic even - compared to its siblings. The amount of sheer beauty on display here is simply dazzling, like a glorious fireworks display unfurling in slow motion. To any curious listener who has yet to dive into the magical world of Beach House: this is the one you absolutely must experience. What do you think? Memories? Favorite tracks? • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 07. ACTRESS - R.I.P. RELEASED: 23 APRIL 2012 PRODUCED BY: DARREN J. CUNNINGHAM LABEL: HONEST JON’S COUNTRY: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 GENRE: ELECTRONIC • AMBIENT • EXPERIMENTAL TECHNO A turn towards the darker and more abstract, Darren J. Cunningham’s third LP as Actress remains his most consistently fascinating and compelling release. With its focus predominantly set on the interplay between disparate textures and cyclical melodic motifs, the effect is more painterly than it is structural; the tracks act more as set pieces for the listener to explore rather than as anything particularly compositional in a traditional sense. Deepening the album’s intrigue is that within its robotic and alien exterior, R.I.P. feels distinctly sinister or even haunted at times, joining Boards Of Canada’s Geogaddi as one of modern electronic music’s creepiest masterpieces. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 08. CHROMATICS - KILL FOR LOVE RELEASED: 26 MARCH 2012 PRODUCED BY: JOHNNY JEWEL LABEL: ITALIANS DO IT BETTER COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: DREAM POP • INDIE ROCK • SYNTHPOP Still the most epic release that producer/multi-instrumentalist/Italians Do It Better label mastermind Johnny Jewel has to his name, Kill For Love is an indie classic that sits outside of time and trend. I can’t think of another record that so perfectly captures the essence of driving alone through a city at night - in the rain of course, for added drama - the mood is urban and nocturnal, steeped in nostalgic analog synths and decorated with vinyl hiss and crackle. Lead singer Ruth Radelet manages to sound thoughtful, emotionally exhausted and vaguely bored all at once, providing the perfect cooler-than-ice narration to these dark tales of heartache, violence and ennui. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 09. LAUREL HALO - QUARANTINE RELEASED: 21 MAY 2012 PRODUCED BY: LAUREL HALO LABEL: HYPERDUB COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: AMBIENT POP • ELECTRONIC • AMBIENT • EXPERIMENTAL Laurel Halo’s debut LP is a brilliant and richly rewarding work of sonic art, albeit one so idiosyncratic that it’s proven to be something of a divisive acquired taste. For fans of the more abstract/experimental ends of the electronic music spectrum, Quarantine will provide a treasure trove of fascinating and complex sounds and textures to obsess over. The main barrier to entry for most listeners will be the atonal and untreated vocals, which cut through the music’s hyper-digital sheen in jarring contrast. This dichotomy between the raw and imperfect human element of the vocal and the virtual oceans of utterly inorganic sound is absolutely intentional, and when the aesthetic clicks it’s mindblowing. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 10. CHAIRLIFT - SOMETHING RELEASED: 24 JANUARY 2012 PRODUCED BY: DAN CAREY • ALAN MOULDER LABEL: COLUMBIA COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: NEW WAVE • SYNTHPOP • ART POP Listening to the impeccably polished New Wave production and gargantuan singalong hooks of Chairlift’s second LP, it’s easy to imagine an alternate timeline where this record came out in 1986, ruled the pop charts with an iron fist, Chairlift won a few Grammys and a handful of these tracks are still regularly played at grocery stores alongside hits by Tina Turner and Roxette. In this timeline however, Something is suffice to be one of the absolute best ‘80s-inspired LPs from an era overflowing with them, and an essential precursor to the solo career of the immensely talented Caroline Polachek. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 11. BRIAN ENO - LUX RELEASED: 12 NOVEMBER 2012 PRODUCED BY: BRIAN ENO LABEL: WARP COUNTRY: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 GENRE: AMBIENT Brian Eno is often credited as being the “godfather of ambient music,” and his wondrously beautiful twenty-sixth (!!) solo album Lux revisited the gentle stillness of his late-‘70s ambient projects that earned him this legacy. To its credit, Lux is as versatile as modern ambient music gets; it’s just as suitable for background music as it is for completely immersing yourself in its glimmering depths via headphones and hanging onto every perfectly placed note. In this sense Lux manages to be simultaneously soothing and riveting, depending on how you decide to experience it - it’s the sound of a master doing what he does best, and it is immaculate. • THE 40 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012 12. ARIEL PINK’S HAUNTED GRAFFITI - MATURE THEMES RELEASED: 20 AUGUST 2012 PRODUCED BY: ARIEL ROSENBERG • TIM KOH • KENNY GILMORE LABEL: 4AD COUNTRY: 🇺🇸 GENRE: ART ROCK • PSYCHEDELIC POP • NEW WAVE Arguably the most confounding/brilliant LP from Ariel Pink’s classic 4AD period, Mature Themes built on the success of 2010’s Before Today by using it as a creative springboard for Pink and his crew to explore every musical tangent that struck their fancy. It’s a kaleidoscopic experience to say the least - the word “smorgasbord” comes to mind - with the band shuffling through styles and recording techniques like a magician shuffling a deck of cards mid-air. As labyrinthine as things can get at times, Mature Themes’ twists and turns always include compelling melodies and memorable (often hilarious) turns of phrase. It’s a fun and fascinating puzzle that still has not lost its flavor. What do you think? Memories? Favorite tracks?
