The Great Pyramid of Cholula (Tlachihualtepetl = “The handmade mountain”) is a 2,400 year old pyramid that is 450 meters wide making it the widest Pyramid in the world. The Cholultecas considered this pyramid incredibly sacred. Most of this pyramid is currently underground because of the cathedral on top of it that makes it almost impossible to excavate safely. The famous Cathedral “Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios” was built by the Spanish people in 1574. The Spanish purposefully built the Cathedral on top of Tlachihualtepetl as a symbol of their Christian conquest. This Cholula region has remained as a religious site and archeological site.
It has been really interesting to learn about the ancient city of Cholula and I hope to come back again soon.
