Listen in as Certified Instructor Abbi Kruse shares about the downfalls of rewards to change children’s behavior. Can it motivate them in the short term? Absolutely, but does it teach children skills like self-regulation or impulse control that they can take with them and use for the rest of their lives? Sadly, no. It teaches them to please the adult handing out the rewards and to demonstrate the expected behavior only when that adult is around.

Conscious Discipline offers a different perspective. We see conflict as an opportunity to teach. Instead of punishing a child for a missing skill or trying to motivate a child with rewards into better behavior, we see behavior as a call for help and look for ways to teach that child the skill they are missing, which is key to long-lasting behavior change.
