I come from the cane. In many ways than one. In many lifetimes, The cane oppressed me. In this lifetime, the cane will free me.

To my great-great-grandfather, I forgive you. I forgive you because I don’t know what made you decide to take the trip to St. Lucia from Barbados but I’m grateful to you. To my great-grandfather, I thank you. I thank you for freeing us and for balancing the family scale. I thank you for purchasing the cane, the land, and the fruit trees. In this lifetime, the cane will free me: me and my family. Selah.
