The farm house was empty, much like we’d expected it to be. It sat on a small hillside, not too far from Grave and the Meuse Canal. As the company ravaged through the interior, looking for drinks and smokes, Rigo and I stood outside, admiring the flowers that were coming into bloom. You could tell it was September because the purple dahlias in the yard had begun to show color. Mom always said the beauty of a country came from what the ground could provide. The quietness and serene nature of the countryside drowned out the miserable reality that the people here had been experiencing German occupation for over four years. That’s what we were here for. My task, as part of the 82nd, is to take Arnhem.
