Spending time at airports and in planes all the time is probably the least favorite part of my job. The flight to Nepal however is special. It lets me relive part of my motorcycle journey from The Netherlands to Australia in a very short time. 6 month of travel compressed in a few hours… The lake and the Vulcano may mean little to you but I can recognize it from above and it brings me back to one of the best parts of my travels. In Ankara they warned me about the terrorists over east. The PKK is horrible and they will kill you is all I heard. It was however on my way to Iran so I had to go through. The heavily armed checkpoints near Tatvan added to the scare. This, of course, is where my bike broke down. It did not want to start. I got off and tried to push start the heavily loaded Africa Twin. Out of nowhere, little “terrorists” came running at me and… started helping me push my bike. I made it to Tatvan and was warmly welcomed by a local bike shop owner who fixed my bike and put me into a hotel to get a good nights sleep. The next day they drove me to the top of the volcano and shared their local delicacies with me. I met some kids on the street and I made and printed some photos of them. I was invited to their older sister’s wedding the next day. I spend 3 days in Tatvan and was not able to spend a single dollar… terrorists… It changed my view of the world and its people and how our press shows it to us for ever. 2 Mount Ararat near the Iranian border 3 and 4 Doha by night 5 Hopefully The last monsoon thunderstorms over Kathmandu.
