📚 B O O K R E V I E W 📚 Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (I know I’m in the minority with this!) Synopsis: Recovering drug addict Mallory takes a job as a live-in nanny for a picture perfect family. Her 5-year-old charge’s cute sketches suddenly turn dark and sinister… depicting a woman being dragged through the woods. As the drawings grow creepily detailed, Mallory races to uncover the tragic, unsolved murder hidden behind them before it’s too late. Review: While it’s undeniably a strong premise, I walked away feeling a little underwhelmed and that I had missed the hype train for this one. On a positive note, the artwork included throughout the novel is a massive strong point that adds a wonderfully eerie visual layer to the story. It leans into the suspense genre for me (rather than horror), and delivered a couple of truly eerie scenes which it just needed more of. Whilst the red herrings felt a bit too obvious, I genuinely didn’t see the big final twist coming, which is always a great save for a thriller! I was nowhere near guessing it and that is always a plus point for me. Unfortunately, a few things held it back from living up to the buzz. The main character’s recovery felt far too glossy and unrealistic, the characters (including the leads) lacked and real depth, and I just found it a bit slow - rather than “wow” I was just mostly “oh, right”. 😬 For me, it’s a quick one-and-done if you want an easy mystery, but it just didn’t hit the mark I was hoping for. This gets a lot of great reviews so as with all books, it’s a matter of individual taste, perspective, and preference - don’t let my opinion put you off giving it a go as a lot of people love it. 😊 Q. Did you catch the hype train for this one? Or were you left standing on the platform with me? Thanks to my fellow Mood Swings and Murder buddy readers… a fun chat as always! #booksta #thrillerbooks #unpopularopinions #bookthoughts #bookworm
