Happy to feed the dogs I feed.
Last solo walk for me of the year, and we shot a limit of male mearns. Today was Aloys day, she put up 7 coveys alone before swan diving into a tank before a photo. Ending the day with the most mearns coveys In a day of the year, 14. Last year we had many days over 20 for reference.
This has been the most dry winter I’ve seen in 8 years hunting here, and the bird numbers aren’t what they were last year, but when you’re trying to find the hardest to scent game bird in conditions between 8 and 17% humidity at most, you know you’re walking by birds that are there, so many unproductive finds that turn into finds or nothing at all and when you gaze at the ground you see all the signs of birds that have been digging there recently. It’s been weird.
I hope we get some insane spring rains or a mild summer or next season will be rough. Missing out on winter rains and missing that Important seed bank Isn’t looking good so far.
You had to earn every quail this year, and it really showed you which dogs could hang more than ever.
I’ve got 6 female setters that I’m damn proud of.
Despite there being 4 more days of the season this is a solo walk I’m happy to call my last for 24/25’
We hunted birds in 8 states this year and had plenty of barn burning days over good dog work on every species we set our sights on. We spent over 2 months out of state chasing birds.
Maus got a full season as the designated flusher and excelled in that role.
