2 years agoNo absolutely not, what a ridiculous idea and insulting to those being asked as well as to others who, supposedly can't understand! I'm English by the way.
2 years agoCaller from East Anglia here UK TV is definitely bad at representation of regional dialects, not just the Scottish ones. If they are heard it's always historical drama insinuating they are dead, or they are middle class London based actors doing them, badly.
2 years agoMost TV shows from the states have the actors put on a non existent “Atlantic” accent. Characters from the Calton talking like Kirsty Wark disnae wirk.
2 years agoExposure has to happen. I'm w glish and so far haven't had an accent i've struggled eniugh to understand I've blanked. Exposure HAS to happen. Ot keeps accents alive. My regional accent has been replaced by a southern accent simialrly because LONDONERS (specifically) could not understand a west country one. The dilition of accents just becuase a minority (mostly from london in this case as they own most british media) kills language, dialect, idiolect, avvens, and natural evoloution of them all. Wevakue diversity, but donxt allow it in media thay's not London based. I dnxt want to have all my film and tv to sound dilited because the real world isn't
2 years agoMakes me think of the excellent series Trawlermen, filmed in Aberdeenshire which used to include subtitles from English into English 😂 (admittedly Doric/ Scots being shouted over the roar of the North Sea). Trying to homogenise the wide array of interesting accents and dialects in UK English and beyond would only make TV more boring and encourage ignorant attitudes. We need to train our ear to hear and understand other accents.
2 years agoNo accent should be changed because lazy people chose not to use their ears and actually listen 👌🏻
