Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh says mobile phones “destroy drama and destroy culture”. Speaking to Martin Geissler in front of a live audience at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the author says the “poison” of mobile phones presents issues to him during the writing process. “You’re writing this passage, and you think to yourself, ‘They would just phone 999 and the polis would come and sort it all out…how can I make them lose this mobile phone?” 🎧Listen to the full Scotcast interview with Irvine Welsh on BBC Sounds. #BBCScotlandNews #BBCNews #Scotland #Edinburgh #Scotcast #Edinburghfringe

Irvine Welsh: Reality Is Not Enough ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars Exciting, funny and thought-provoking, this documentary offers a vivid insight into one of Scotland’s most distinctive literary voices. Blending first-hand interviews with on-location filming in Edinburgh, Miami and Canada, the film traces Irvine Welsh’s early life and the influences that shaped him. We meet “Mrs Welsh number three” from Edinburgh’s posher side, who prompts one of Irvine’s trademark quips: when asked if he played football on grass, he replies, “sometimes on glue.” Old school friends reflect on the impact of drugs had on their lives growing up. Friends who have died from drugs has clearly had an impact on Irvine. There's a great moment when a fan at a book festival calls him “the Trainspotting guy.” He admits it may not be his best novel, but it is the one that will define his legacy. He's still driven for Scotland to become independent and sees the advantages of making your own decisions.  Director Paul Sng’s inventive use of lighting and projections creates a hypnotic, almost psychedelic quality, mirrored in a sequence where Welsh undergoes a supervised hallucinogenic drug experience. It’s an exhilarating device that captures both the chaos and creativity of his life. A brilliant and revealing portrait of an author who has lived every word he writes. Choose life, choose this film. #edfilmfest #edinburgh #irvinewelsh #reviews #trainspotting
