The noodles were different, but this time her reaction was too. Hannah ordered ramen at a new restaurant, expecting the curly noodles she’s familiar with. When it came out they were straight noodles that looked like spaghetti. Not long ago that difference would have been enough for her not to eat it, but this time she acknowledged that it looked different, pointed out the differences, and worked through her discomfort to try it. I can’t tell you how many times she’s ordered something familiar with every intention of eating it, only for an unexpected difference to make it feel wrong. A different noodle shape or a different color broth might seem insignificant to someone else, but for her it would mean going without the meal entirely. This is why “I’m sure you can find something she can eat on the menu” isn’t always that simple with ARFID. Finding something familiar on the menu doesn’t mean it will arrive looking or feeling familiar to her. It’s also why “she’ll eat when she’s hungry” is so frustrating to hear. We’ve watched her skip countless meals even when she was hungry because the food in front of her didn’t feel safe. This time she noticed the differences, talked through what felt uncomfortable, and still gave it a try.
