Today marks 20 years since the day Joe and I legalized our long godless heathen union and got properly hitched. Not much was traditional that day (for starters, if your teenaged daughters are your bridesmaids you’re already doing things another way) and not much has been traditional since. Today while I was far away from him I had to put gas in the rental car before I returned it, thus marking a full year since the last time I had to pump gas (funnily enough, here in PEI) and it got me to thinking about some of the things we do for each other - not the big things or the wild gestures, but the mundane and ordinary ways that we spare each other the chores we don’t like, the way we make it just a little nicer for each other- a gentle path where (for the most part, don’t get me started on how weird long marriages get) a chunk of each day is spent serving up food, or pumping gas, or whatever it is that your beloved hates. It is a sweet and fair place to be at this many decades into a life together, and hitching my wagon to Joe’s remains one of my all time best decisions. I love you Joe, we’ll celebrate when I’m home. You drive, I’ll cook.
