a year agoWithout a doubt, this is painfully accurate. I truly hope her family wins. My first job in the psychiatric field was at a hospital where Jazmin had been admitted. I remember clearly how my supervisors didn’t take her seriously and ultimately denied her the chance to transfer to a residential program. I advocated for her, but faced pushback from leadership…including a supervisor who conveniently stepped down around the same time all of this was happening. At the time, I was young and new to the field, but now with more experience, I can say with confidence that the way her case was handled was completely unacceptable. They abused their authority and treated Jazmin like just another number, instead of a person in need of real care. I got to know her well during her stay. She confided in me often, and she’s one of the patients I never forgot after I left that job. Hearing about her death truly hurt my soul. I never stopped wondering how she was doing or worrying about her after she was discharged. To learn what happened to her was absolutely heartbreaking. The city failed her. The system failed her. When I tried to file a complaint about a social worker not being assigned to her case, I was severely punished by upper management. They didn’t take me seriously… likely because I was young and new to the field. But everything about how she was treated was wrong, and I’ve never stopped thinking about it.
