When people say “high sugar,” they often mean donuts, chocolate, ice cream, cookies, cake and pastries. Most of those foods get around half their calories from fat. Hardly anyone overeats spoonfuls of plain sugar. Sugar isn’t uniquely fattening. Fat gain comes from eating more energy than you burn. For example, in one study two groups ate the same calories, but one got 121 g of sugar a day and the other 12 g. Both lost about 7 kg in 6 weeks and saw similar improvements in blood pressure. The real issue is calorie-dense, hyper-palatable fat + sugar foods, because they’re less filling and easy to overeat. Sugary drinks are the one exception as liquid calories don’t fill you up much, so they add up fast (aka just have the zero calorie soft drink instead of the sugary one). Obviously the above doesn’t mean sugar should make up half your diet. Most of what you eat should still be whole foods, with plenty of fibre, protein, fruit and veg. But if your calories are in check and your diet is mostly good, you don’t need to fear sugar.
