Periodical cicadas, such as those in the genus *Magicicada*, have evolved remarkable 13- and 17-year life cycles, likely as a survival strategy to evade predators through both long underground development and prime-numbered emergence intervals that reduce the chances of synchronization with predator populations. These life cycles emerged during the Pleistocene, when glacial events isolated cicada populations, leading to the divergence of multiple broods and the evolution of distinct species groups. By emerging in enormous numbers, periodical cicadas overwhelm predators through sheer volume—a strategy known as predator satiation—ensuring enough survive to reproduce. This unusual life history, governed by a precise genetic clock triggered by environmental cues like soil temperature, makes periodical cicadas a unique and striking example of evolutionary adaptation.
