I was out detecting with the property owner of one of my usual mid-1850’s sites and he popped this out of the ground! Aside from being SUPER jealous, I offered to take the scissors home to clean and preserve them. After 36 hours in a non-acidic chelation solution, I got about 95% of the rust out of the steel. It flash-rusted in a few spots so I had to redo the process once and then get the microcrystalline wax over the artifact as quickly as possible. I’m very happy how this turned out and was able to give the artifact back to the owners in a nice display case!
