It’s been crazy hot with no clouds lately so I haven’t been out too much. Decided to take some new photos of some old finds of a 1860’s US Cavalry camp! by @detecting_colorado

Went back to my 1840’s-1850’s fur trade-era site and it was ON! I haven’t detected it since winter and I always left without any finds. I’m beyond stoked on my Rifleman eagle cuff button! Also included a fired minie, few brass kettle points, iron point, super old hand-cut square nail, and what I believe to be an unfinished brass trade ring.

Found my first Native American tool while detecting an old farm field! The material is Black Forest Petrified Wood, worked into a thumb scraper. It jumped out of a plug I was digging which ended up being a shotgun shell lol So excited about this piece! taken in El Paso County by @detecting_colorado

Banner day of digging for 2025, so far! From prior research and opinions of others, I have recovered a brass Native American earring/jewelry adornment from Colorado’s Fur Trade era of 1820-1840. That’s close to 200 years old! The shape and etchings are reflective of a thunderbird’s tail. Super happy with saving this historic artifact! taken in El Paso County by @detecting_colorado

I was out detecting with the property owner of one of my usual mid-1850’s sites and he popped this out of the ground! Aside from being SUPER jealous, I offered to take the scissors home to clean and preserve them. After 36 hours in a non-acidic chelation solution, I got about 95% of the rust out of the steel. It flash-rusted in a few spots so I had to redo the process once and then get the microcrystalline wax over the artifact as quickly as possible. I’m very happy how this turned out and was able to give the artifact back to the owners in a nice display case! taken in El Paso County by @detecting_colorado

A friend had posted earlier today a percussion cap tin and I suddenly realized I had dug one 4 years ago and stuck it in my scrap box, not knowing what it was! Thankfully I still had it! I found this cap tin on an 1850’s campsite along a trail that the US military frequented. A few other artifacts I found within 10’ are a fixed loop halter hook, percussion cap and nipples, small-caliber revolver bullets, and a US eagle cuff button. taken in El Paso County by @detecting_colorado

While you’d never find a mid-1700’s shoe buckle in Colorado, I did purchase it from a detectorist in MA who dug this up a couple months back. It still had dirt and corrosion on it so I went to work right away to stabilize what fragile copper was left. I removed all organic material first with dental tools. Afterwards, I used some Andre’s Pencils to remove the more corroded areas. I then applied a microcrystalline wax polish and allowed that to cure for 24 hours. While it won’t completely stop further oxidation, it’ll slow it down considerably, especially with low to no moisture in the Colorado air. I’m very happy to own and display such a cool artifact! taken in El Paso County by @detecting_colorado

Little restoration work on these ca. 1830’s brass octagonal sliding-temple spectacles. Not a bad $20 spent and an hour of cleaning/ reshaping.
Excavation season has ended in Colorado unfortunately with the ground freezing and snow in wooded areas so I’ll be keeping myself busy with restoration projects like this! taken in Colorado Springs, Colorado by @detecting_colorado

Stumbled onto an old campsite fire pit yesterday and pulled a couple old buttons out, a porcelain four-hole and a ball button, missing the shank. Also found the remains of the campsite’s dinner as well 😂
