We had such a great afternoon sharing a presentation, great good, and community at the McAllister House Museum!

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the museum!

Special thanks to Bobby Stevens for sharing his talents and passion for history with us today! And especially for his generous donation of an original 1876 Centennial Exposition admission ticket to the McAllister House Museum!

Bobby presented this artifact to the museum at the presentation and it was very well received! We are excited to display it for the remainder of the year as we continue to celebrate 250/150 with our guests.

And huge thanks to Pam Thatcher for making and serving the most delicious apple dumplings at our reception! Served alongside vanilla ice cream, it was the perfect summertime dessert! Iced cold lemonade, strawberries and blueberries, and kettle corn rounded it off.

Remember that we shared a bit ago that "sweet corn" debuted at the Exposition! It is still just as fun and amazing as it was 150 years ago!

We aren't quite done with the McAllister/Colorado Springs/1876 Centennial Exposition yet! Amy, our Visitor Services Manager will be presenting a program on August 8th that will bring that history full circle! Details coming soon!

Big thank you to everyone who made it out to our end of summer Lawn Party on Saturday evening! The rain held off for the most part and you were all great company!

A special thank you to Bobby Stevens with Detecting Colorado and Bristol Brewing Company
for their support of this event!

Detecting Colorado does some amazing recovery and preservation work in the local and regional area. Bobby's work blends metal detecting with archaeology, history, and preservation.
His efforts and discoveries have not only added to our collection but has also expanded our understanding of the property and the early years of the McAllister's. Bobby will be back with us for Harvest Fest on September 27th so be sure to come and have a look at his table!

We also presented a mini exhibit of artifacts and minerals that were recovered and preserved from "The Dig" performed on the McAllister grounds in 1987!

We are sharing some of them with you here and will continue to share in future posts.

Bobby Stevens of Detecting Colorado will be our guest presenter at the our Lawn Party on August 23rd!

He has recovered some amazing artifacts from the McAllister House property and around the region and will be sharing some of those with you! Tickets are $25.00 for 21+ and available at this link: https://brewsandcroquet2025.eventbrite.com/

Did You Know?: The first metal detector was invented by Gustave Trouve in 1874 as a medical device that would locate metal fragments and bullets from patients.

Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the telephone and graphophone) developed a prototype for a metal detector in 1881, called an electromagnetic device that used induction balance. Bell quickly developed and used the device to try and save the life of President Garfield, who had been shot by an assassin.

Fast forward to 2025 and Bobby Stevens will provide a demonstration for how metal detecting is used today to aid historians and archaeologists in recovering, preserving, and interpreting history!

We will also have a great selection of beers from Bristol Brewing, snacks, croquet and other lawn games to enjoy. We hope you will join us!

A few weeks ago, we posted about "The Dig" that was done on the property when the small, white building was removed from in front of the McAllister House kitchen in 1987.

The process of locating, identifying, recording, and preserving archaeological items is pivotal to a deeper understanding of history and the people who lived on this property over the course of 85 years (1873-1958).

We are giving you a sneak peek here and will reveal more at the Lawn Party on August 23rd!

We invite you to join us at our Lawn Party on August 23rd, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for an opportunity to connect with Bobby Stevens of Detecting Colorado. He is an avid researcher, metal detectorist, and photographer.

His passion is to recover and preserve artifacts for individuals and organizations. In 2020, Bobby recovered some amazing artifacts from the McAllister House grounds that are now part of our collection, including a spoon with the monogram, "EC", which we now know was part of a set that belonged to Elizabeth Cooper McAllister.

Bobby will be demonstrating metal detecting equipment and highlighting some of the artifacts that he has recovered from the region. You will not want to miss this event!

Tickets are on sale now and available to purchase through Eventbrite https://brewsandcroquet2025.eventbrite.com/ Proceeds from this event will go to support the McAllister House Museum!

The McAllister House Museum Harvest Festival will be hosting some great historical research and preservation groups this year!
This will be an opportunity for the community to learn about metal detecting, archaeology, historic preservation and restoration efforts in Colorado Springs.

Union Printers Home:
Union Printers Home was established in 1889 as a facility that would provide care for the sick (many suffering from Tuberculosis and Printer's Lung) and elderly members of the International Typographical Union.
UPH Partners purchased the Union Printers Home property in 2021 and "set out to protect its most significant historic features while breathing new life into the site" for the community.

Please stop by their table to talk with Union Printers Home Partners to learn more about the long history of UPH and the visions for its future in our community.

Historic Uptown Neighborhood:

Historic Uptown Neighborhood was founded in 2002 in Colorado Springs. They are an organization that works with the community to identify and help preserve historic homes, buildings, and streetscapes in Colorado Springs.

Please stop by the the Historic Uptown Neighborhood table to learn more about resources and information about historical buildings, preservation resources and potential tax credits for buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. This organization is actively working to create safe neighborhoods and you can get more information about how to help out with those efforts.

Bobby Stevens, Metal Detecting:

Bobby Stevens is an avid historical researcher who brings together archaeology, artifact dating and identification, metal detecting, and photography in engaging ways for the community. Bobby's discoveries at the McAllister House Museum helped to expand and enrich the McAllister Family history and our understanding of life in the earliest days of Colorado Springs.

Please stop by Bobby's table and check out some really interesting artifacts that he has uncovered in the local and surrounding areas over the years. If you are interested in metal detecting and equipment, this is a table you won't want to miss!

Happy Birthday, Colorado: The Centennial State!
What was happening with the McAllister's in 1876?
Henry and Elizabeth McAllister gave birth to their youngest daughter, Matilda, on March 16th. Harry was four years old (1872) and Mary was almost 2 years old (1874) at the time. This was a young and very active family growing up in the formative years of Colorado Springs and the summer of our statehood!
In the summer of 1876, Major McAllister and family traveled by train to Philadelphia, PA to visit family and attend the Centennial Exposition. Major McAllister was asked to speak at several engagements in Philadelphia about Colorado and to provide a selection of rocks and minerals from the region to the 1876 Exposition.
According to the Rocky Mountains News, Volume 17, June 14, 1876, "Major McAllister secured several hundred specimens, which have been carefully labeled and artisitically arranged in a cabinet shape and is now ready for transportation by Commissioner Decatur to Philadelphia." The article reported that the decorative chest was made of native pine and cedar and had mirror lined walls with revolving shelves: "The whole structure, unique and curious with its rare contents, so creditable to the public spirit of Major McAllister and to the mechanical taste and genius of Mr. Ege, will make an attractive decoration for the Colorado section of the Kansas & Colorado building." Colorado, as a newly minted state, donated its centennial funds to the building and costs of the Colorado part of the building at the 1876 Exposition.
In the McAllister House Collection, we have a Howe Scale Token that was likely brought back by the McAllister's from the 1876 Centennial Exposition. It was found on the grounds by Bobby Stevens and is a wonderful artifact that personally connects to the early history of the McAllister's and their participation in the 1876 Centennial Exposition.
Did you know? Mass produced popcorn, Heinz ketchup, typewriters, Singer sewing machines and the first demonstration of Alexander Graham Bell's telephone all debuted at the 1876 Centennial Exposition!

Last Saturday we were fortunate enough to host Bobby, a local metal detecting enthusiast, here at the McAllister House. Bobby has been detecting in the county for about three years now and while he really enjoys finding objects, he is also passionate about cleaning and preserving the artifacts. Bobby is an excellent photographer and the pictures of the objects are courtesy of him. Here is what Bobby found: a Victorian style drawer knob, a lead hem weight, a rim-shot bullet casing, and a typeset font “T.” We thank him for his professionalism and hope to have him back soon!
