What a difference two years makes! 😄

On Saturday, I had the absolute pleasure of joining @hope_olson_ with a group of local artists at a business workshop organized by the wonderful @phaetongallerycharlottesville. Almost exactly two years ago, I attended a similar workshop with Hope at Phaeton, and I couldn’t help but consider where I’m at now compared to then.

Two years ago in April 2023, I was painting a great deal but just starting to think about professional options—I hadn’t yet sold anything and wouldn’t officially start my business until November 2023. Participating in this workshop at Phaeton influenced me to continue working towards this goal of selling my work. Hope’s generosity in sharing her experience, and the kindness and openness of the other artists and ladies at Phaeton, encouraged me that this dream was attainable.

In April of 2025, I’m not where I want to be professionally yet—not by a long shot. And honestly, I’ve struggled with what has seemed like considerable setbacks, discouragement about demands on my time that have slowed my progress, and doubts about my art and abilities in the last few months. But despite all of this, I’ve kept making small steps forward towards my goals, and I’m definitely closer to them now than I was two years ago.

The longer that I’m an artist, the more that I see everyday ups and downs as part of the lifestyle—but they often can’t be trusted to give an accurate perspective of one’s professional trajectory in the short term. Sometimes progress can only truly be seen over time. And community, small moments of encouragement, and generosity towards others really makes a difference in the long term. 😊
