What I wish I knew as a beginner knitter⬇️⬇️

1. German short rows are not as scary as they may seem! They’re great for creating a slope along your shoulders and for shaping sleeve caps. I was very confused on how they worked until I actually did them so just trust the process and it’ll make sense!

2. If you want to learn new skills, follow a pattern! Patterns are a great and quick way to expose yourself to new techniques.

3. Different fibers really do change the look of your final product. For example wool is very elastic and will tend to hold its shape overtime whereas silk lacks that elasticity but in turn has a lot more drape.

4. I used to always use bamboo needles no matter what fiber I was knitting with. I’ve now found that I can only use wood needles with wool or alpaca. All other fibers tend to grip to wood needles so I opt for my metal needles instead!

5. Italian bind off. I love the way it looks but do not enjoy doing it, however I do find that for 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing it is absolutely worth the extra time!

These are just things I wish I knew sooner when I first started knitting! I was very young and social media was not a resource at that time so I hope these tips help if you are a beginner knitter!🩷

What are some things you wish you knew about knitting when you first started?

Also side note // in this video I’m working on the scrappy version of the Darling Sweater🩷

Hi there from Australia 🇦🇺 🐨 I taught myself to knit this year, cable stitching what started as a knee rug and is now half way to a blanket with 300 stitch rows and about 16 balls of wool (merino/alpaca) including some with transition colours for a cool blendy bit. It just kept growing as I sorted out the colours!! I’ve been watching your knitting technique and will try to pick up some skills so my hands don’t cramp!! Reading a pattern will be the next phase as I have no idea there yet. Really enjoy your page and your skill is something else!!

Are there any metal needles you can recommend? I normally only use wood needles but really want to try metal ones!

Is there a YouTube video you preferred to watch to learn the German short rows? I've tried a couple but end up giving up because the video is confusing

Mastering Italian bind-off was such a game changer and now I’m actually quite efficient when doing it 😄

I plan my projects based on what skills I’d like to hone/ learn! I’m a process, not product person (which does get me in trouble with piles of WIPs lol)

There are easier methods than Italian bind-off that give similar results. I learned to knit over 60 years ago so I can't remember being a newbie, but I'm constantly learning new things, thanks to the internet.

I wish I knew that anything I can do on straight needles I can do on circular needles

How do you do the Italian bind off for 2x2? Do you have any video recs?

That’s part of the joy of a hobby that needs skill though: the journey. ☺️ I’m still very much a wooden needle person: when should you use metal?
