Polyphenols are plant-based compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit the skin.

Examples of dietary sources of polyphenols include blackberries, blueberries, celery, walnuts, green tea, soy, and red wine. While oral supplements are likely not necessary for those with well-balanced diets, grape seed extract, resveratrol, quercetin, and curcumin (among others) are ingredients that may be found in oral polyphenol supplements.

Polyphenols may improve skin moisturization, increase skin elasticity, and protect against signs of skin aging such as fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Green tea specifically has been shown to reduce damage caused by UV radiation from the sun, and both green tea and curcumin (turmeric) may be helpful in the setting of inflammatory skin conditions.

Love seeing polyphenols get the spotlight they deserve. The synergy between dietary antioxidants and skin barrier resilience is so underrated. Grape seed extract, EGCG, and curcumin are power players—topical and systemic support at its finest.
