The fraxel laser is a great treatment for sun-damaged hands. In addition to fading solar lentigines (“sun spots”), fraxel stimulates collagen and elastin production, making the skin feel and look smoother ✨ by @bersonlebowitzmd

Scars may result from various injuries to the skin such as trauma, surgery, and burns. This patient’s forehead scar improved with a combination of fractional non-ablative laser (Fraxel) and pulsed dye laser (Vbeam) treatments. With the appropriate interventions tailored to each patient, we can address the discoloration and textural irregularities of scars. by @bersonlebowitzmd

This patient presented with acne and persistent redness from her breakouts. She was not able to take the oral medications commonly used to treat acne. She continues to improve significantly with a topical regimen and in-office treatments including chemical peels and pulsed dye laser sessions. by @bersonlebowitzmd

Poison ivy is a form of contact dermatitis caused by an inflammatory reaction to urushiol, an oily plant resin found in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac plants.

After exposure to one of these plants, a rash typically develops within a few days. In those never previously exposed to urushiol, the rash can be delayed for a couple of weeks. Importantly, contact with clothing contaminated with urushiol can cause the rash as well. Poison ivy dermatitis is characterized by very itchy, raised, pink or red circular bumps (usually in a linear formation) on areas of exposed skin. Blisters can form as well. The ankles and wrists are commonly affected, but multiple areas of the body can develop a rash before the urushiol is washed off hands and clothing.

It is important to cleanse the skin as soon as possible after contacting poison ivy, oak, or sumac plants. All clothing should be washed, as should pets that might have been exposed. For those who routinely garden, vinyl gloves are recommended for prevention.

Management of poison ivy dermatitis may include topical corticosteroid creams or oral steroids such as prednisone. Additional soothing measures may include anti-itch lotions, colloidal oatmeal baths, and oral anti-histamines.

Melanoma can develop within an existing mole or may appear as a new mole on the body. A useful tool for assessing your moles is the ABCDE checklist (see above).

Those with a personal or family history of skin cancer, a significant number of “atypical” or abnormal appearing moles, fair skin, a history of severe/blistering sunburns, or a history of tanning bed use may be at increased risk of developing melanoma. Sun damage is a risk factor that can be minimized. We therefore recommend broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above, and re-application of sunscreen every 2-3 hours when spending time outdoors.

Melanoma Monday is an important reminder to visit a board-certified dermatologist for any changing or concerning moles or growths on the body. Since melanoma can spread from the skin to other parts of the body, early detection is key.

Polyphenols are plant-based compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit the skin.

Examples of dietary sources of polyphenols include blackberries, blueberries, celery, walnuts, green tea, soy, and red wine. While oral supplements are likely not necessary for those with well-balanced diets, grape seed extract, resveratrol, quercetin, and curcumin (among others) are ingredients that may be found in oral polyphenol supplements.

Polyphenols may improve skin moisturization, increase skin elasticity, and protect against signs of skin aging such as fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Green tea specifically has been shown to reduce damage caused by UV radiation from the sun, and both green tea and curcumin (turmeric) may be helpful in the setting of inflammatory skin conditions.
