Keystone Mandalas Reemerge after 40 years…

On the walls of the original Keystone Korner in the 70s and early 80s in San Francisco, lived the Keystone Mandalas. They are striking artworks handmade by fabric decorator Faith Kark in 1976, and were created from swatches of multicolored cloth with an oil-painted background on particle board. They were designed to reflect the sound and feeling of each individual artist that is depicted. All Mandalas have corresponding artist names on them, and all but one, are signed by the musical artists themselves: legendary musicians including Dexter Gordon, Grover Washington Jr., Art Blakey, Eddie Henderson, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Bobby Hutcherson and others.

There are a total of 18 pieces, all brought into existence to celebrate these great jazz icons, and are being publicly displayed for the first time in over 40 years as part of this Juneteenth celebration and to honor Black Music Month at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum this Thursday, June 19th!
