what is tencel, modal, viscose, lyocell and rayon? they’re actually all part of the same fabric family. most start as wood pulp from trees before being chemically processed into fiber. the differences come down to how they’re manufactured. rayon is the umbrella term. viscose is the most common version. modal is generally softer and more durable than viscose. lyocell is generally considered the highest-quality option in this category and is made using a more closed-loop manufacturing process. and tencel? tencel isn’t actually a fabric. it’s a brand name. tencel lyocell is lyocell. tencel modal is modal. personally, i think these fabrics sit somewhere in the middle. i would generally choose lyocell over polyester or nylon because polyester and nylon are fully synthetic plastic fibers. but i still prefer fabrics in their more natural state like organic cotton, linen, silk, wool and cashmere. just because something starts from trees doesn’t automatically mean it’s still natural by the time it becomes clothing. what fabric should i break down next?
