In Iran, something as simple as taking a ballet class can put your life at risk. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, ballet was banned and the Iranian National Ballet Company was dissolved.

Known as the “Persian Swan,” Tara Ghassemieh became the first Iranian-American principal dancer at Golden State Ballet. Through Dancers of Iran, an organization connecting dancers inside and outside the country, she has secretly taught ballet to students inside Iran using virtual classes and underground networks, reaching young people who put their safety on the line simply to dance.

For women and girls in Iran, the restrictions on dance are part of a much larger fight for freedom. Women face strict dress codes, discrimination in education and employment, and restrictions on their ability to travel and make decisions about their own lives. In 2022, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in morality police custody, the Woman, Life, Freedom movement sparked nationwide protests. Iranian authorities responded with a violent crackdown that left hundreds dead and thousands arrested.

Ghassemieh has used her art to bring attention to their fight. She created The White Feather, a ballet telling the story of Iran’s disbanded National Ballet Company, and has used her platform to amplify the voices of Iranian women. In an interview with DanceOn, Ghassemieh opened up about supporting the movement and the risks that have come with speaking out. Her Instagram account was recently hacked and held for ransom, and she believes her advocacy made her a target. For Ghassemieh and her students, dance is a form of self-expression, freedom, joy and resistance.
