Interviewer: Looking back, what were some of the most defining moments of your time as a judge – particularly while serving on election petition panels, or as Acting Chief Judge of Abia state?
Mum: As a member of the election petition tribunal in one of the states, one of the defining moments was when I was overwhelmed with sadness during a particular election petition proceedings. I discovered that a petitioner could not obtain justice that he rightly deserved because he couldn’t surmount the herculean requirements of the Electoral Act at the time, in order to prove his case. I prayed for the amendment of the Electoral Act so that those who rig elections should not get away with it. As acting Chief Judge, the task was enormous, spanning throughout the judiciary in Abia state. I also had the responsibility of being the Chairman of the State Judicial Service Commission. That is when I experienced another defining moment. I experienced a situation where I had to stand up for what was right despite stiff opposition from within and outside the commission. There were other defining moments, but these are the two that are most memorable and made a lasting impact on me.
