Dinosaurs first appeared around 230 million years ago during the Triassic Period and dominated land ecosystems for more than 160 million years. They ranged from tiny, feathered predators to enormous plant-eaters like Argentinosaurus and fearsome carnivores like Tyrannosaurus rex. Surprisingly, T. rex lived closer in time to humans than to Stegosaurus, showing just how incredibly long dinosaurs existed on Earth. About 66 million years ago, a massive asteroid struck Earth, triggering environmental changes that wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs. However, dinosaurs never completely disappeared because modern birds are actually living dinosaurs, descended from small feathered theropods. That means the pigeons walking around your neighborhood are distant relatives of some of history’s most terrifying predators. Evolution essentially took dinosaurs and gave some of them a career in stealing French fries.
The strangest part about the McMurtry Spéirling is that it does not need to be moving fast to have enormous grip. Its twin fans can generate up to 2,000 kg of downforce from 0 mph, effectively sucking the car onto the track before conventional aero has even had a chance to work. That is the idea that helped the 1,000 bhp Spéirling become the fastest car ever around the Top Gear Test Track, with the Stig setting a 55.9-second lap and beating the 2004 Renault R24 F1 record by 3.1 seconds. It looks tiny, but the engineering behind it is anything but. Follow @iconichypercars for the machines that make you rethink what a car can do.
