As we discuss the Cornell 7 and Jane Doe investigations, we, as a society, need to be more empathetic and understanding. We need to live by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” which encourages active kindness and generosity. by @isaiah_9757

To stop Gun Violence, Gen Z Must Become Engaged as Single-Issue Voters
By Isaiah Anderson

I just watched the Netflix short documentary, All The Empty Rooms, by Steve Hartman and Lou Bopp. This documentary focuses on their seven-year-long project to document the empty bedrooms of children killed in school shootings. Hartman was first assigned to report on school shootings in 1997. Since then, school shootings have increased from 17 to 132 per year. This powerful documentary lets the viewer see the beautiful, hopeful souls of the children who were killed in mass shootings, allowing us to find our empathy again.

These shootings do not make sense. We, the Gen Z generation, people born between 1997 & 2012, now ages 29 to 13, owe it to ourselves and future generations to work to end gun violence in our country by making ourselves single-issue voters.

Guns do not care about age, gender, or race. Firearm-related deaths are one of the leading causes of death among children aged 1 to 19. From 2021 until 2023, 143,312 people died from gun violence. Each of these people has a similar story to those highlighted in All The Empty Rooms.

As Gen Z, we need to be the voice for change and set an example for future generations, and that starts with getting off social media, going out to vote, and getting our voices heard at the ballot box. According to Talker Research, Gen Z spends 6.6 hours consuming media and content each day. Yet, according to USA Facts, “People ages 18 to 24 were the least likely to vote among all age groups, and over half of them were either too busy (22.3%), not interested (20.4%), or were out of town (14.1%).” It doesn’t make sense to throw away our future by not voting.

Gun Violence has plagued our country long enough, and everyone has a right to feel safe, whether it’s on the street, in a school, a church, a movie theater, or on a college campus. Gen-Z has to be the voice for change. To quote Michelle Obama, “The hope for me comes from what we owe the next generation, and we should be ashamed of ourselves if we give up on them.” Let’s make ending gun violence our top voting issue until we achieve real change. by @isaiah_9757

Looking back on this challenging year and the world we live in, I chose to be hopeful. As Michelle Obama said, “There is a lifetime of possibilities.” I’m going to walk in faith as I enter my next 25 years. Happy Birthday, Isaiah. by @isaiah_9757

In 2019, I had the privilege of taking Professor Noah Haiduc-Dale’s AFC Humanities class as a freshman. He named our class The Seekers. Noah’s love of teaching was infectious, and it was clear that teaching was his passion, as he brought joy to the classroom and made learning fun. Noah was my first advisor at Centenary, and I truly enjoyed seeing him every time I went back to visit after graduating. My heart is broken for Centenary, his beloved family, and his friends. We must stand together and remember the light that Noah brought to everything he touched. by @isaiah_9757
