Happy Birthday to Lucy the Elephant! ❤️🐘
Originally built in 1881 and first named “Elephant Bazaar,” Lucy was created by real estate developer James V. Lafferty as a way to attract attention to the South Jersey shore. She stands 65 feet tall, 60 feet long, and 18 feet wide—made entirely of wood and tin sheeting.
Even though Lafferty built two other elephant-shaped structures, Lucy is the only one that still exists. By the 1960s, she had fallen into disrepair and was almost demolished. In 1970, a group of local residents, led by Edwin T. Carpenter rallied to save her. Thanks to their efforts and community fundraising, Lucy was moved 100 yards to her current location in Margate and was fully restored.
She was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and remains a beloved Jersey Shore 📍icon. Her birthday is celebrated every year on the Saturday closest to July 20th!
Lucy’s actual Birthday is July 20th! 🐘❤️
