Nadi Shodana Pranayama - नाडि शोधन प्राणायाम - Alternate Nostril Breathing
•
Nadi = channel or energy pathway
Sodhana = purification/cleansing
Pranayama = life force energy - breath control
•
This yogic breathing exercise is an ancient, sacred practice to balance the nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic) in a rhythmic way. It calms and soothes the mind bringing in clarity and equilibrium, reduces stress and anxiety and prepares you to enter your meditation.
•
Here’s how to do it!
1. Find a comfortable seat (i like to practice in sukhasana : easy seated/cross legged or seated hero pose ) relax the eyes, and let yourself notice the way your breath is traveling, then empty out the lungs.
2. Hand position: Vishnu mudra — with your right hand hold your index and middle finger together and place in between your eyebrows (or third eye chakra — tuning into your intuition and wisdom)
3. Use your right thumb to cover and hold the right nostril and inhale through your left nostril
4. At the top of your inhale, pause and hold, cover your left nostril with your right pinky (or ring) finger, then exhale through your right nostril, inhale through that same right nostril, uncover the left nostril, cover the right with your thumb again and inhale and repeat continuing to find that alternate breathing
5. Suggested rhythm would be inhaling for 4 sec. and exhaling for 4 sec. and evening it out on both sides. Starting with 5-10 rounds
