a year agoThis is the result from sculpture 101 @artslettersandnumbers. In a response to the prompt of REFUGE, I interpreted it through the feeling of joyful connection and the ability to listen. As a person in their 20’s without a home to call my own, I sat with this idea of how refuge can transcend the physical needs of food and shelter. If Refugees could go for days without eating, then what are those invisible forces keeping them on this earth to survive? If radical action is first cultivated within, then what can I do to cultivate our community to bring healing? Simply to LISTEN to your community and help them feel heard may be the first step to change on a small scale, and let this healing naturally ripple out to countries with war and genocide. I was inspired by my Uncle Wey, who broke bread with families in the holy land, and spent time to listen to their stories of organized peaceful resistance. This is an act of resistance to go listen intently and hear about radical perspectives that subvert the depressing narratives that the news tells us. One of my favorite ceramic artists Roberto Lugo inspired the concept to hold space for opposing political identities to come together and feel safe to speak and be heard. I need gentrifiers to invite the voices of those who grew up in this neighborhood into their spaces and have intimate conversations about their struggles and maybe even how they’ve built their anti-fragile spirits to grow from these moments. We’re all inundated with mindless chatter, but we still need to deepen our listening on so many levels. My challenges with this prompt were greater than ever due to the quick 6 -day turnaround. My initial idea filled me full of doubt and I actually scrapped it on the penultimate day. Next time I want see it through with more commitment. With 24 hrs to go, I pulled this off with scraps found around the studio and the help of Craig’s handiwork. The final day I got to show it to my beloved friends and the ticking clock stopped as I was surrounded by their laughter and soft orange light. Thank you for this opportunity to make space for radical thought and to help my soul burn bright.
