The feeling of vast expansion beyond the tunnel. The freedom to turn off the path in search of wonder and discovery. Painting this semester has been a journey of showing up and allowing the canvas to be a state of present possibility. School partitioned my mind so much to prepare myself for the future, but those possibilities are years away from a result. Painting is the kind of practice of making decisions based on what could be rather than what should be. I’m reframing my idea of art as work and allow myself to be messy, experiment, and play with textures by scraping away paint to reveal colors underneath. To my surprise the classroom had just the tool for it! A metal comb to scrape the black paint while it was still wet. In my previous post I spoke about the challenges of being “20 something” to make the point that whenever life gets hard, I’ve felt a tug to balance out that pain with the joy of feeling like I’ve weathered the storm. I’m writing this on a cozy night. by @nov31.wip

I realize the language for grief was lost on me, and most men I’m connected to, so I’m learning to articulate the beauty in harshness with elegance: I’ve moved too many times to count. Life is in boxes, scattered, shattered, and smelling like burnt-out hard work, and sometimes its not even my own dirty laundry wafting about. Grieving a sense of home, sold my beloved ceramic kiln and dealing with social insecurity is helping me practice finding grounding amidst madness, and chaos. I don’t have control over much except for my actions, so I choose to allow myself to express through painting, loving my community and dancing. (More of that in my next post) Without it, I succumb to the pressure of my demons and stagnate.
I was modeling a house out of clay last night, and stuff started snapping and fitting poorly😾. I wanted to curl up and skip my final presentation. As I scored the clay, the smooth surface became serrated and gnarled. I was reminded that the feeling of being rough around the edges is actually an invitation to assemble our multifacets; to build our expansive spirits, so I added slip and pressed the pieces together.
The first strokes in a painting are misaligned, but don’t necessarily have to define your final design. You can change your mind at any time. My understanding washed over me at 3am when grinding through this project in silence. No music, no podcast, no movies to distract me. It’s brutally boring, yes, but that might just make the good times even more exciting. by @nov31.wip

I’m making art that I can’t sell, for it feels too integral to who I am. Five years ago, I made a bucket hat out of a pattern I handed drew on the floor of my dorm room. It took 3 years of independent research into batteries, solar power chargers, buying circuit boards, and troubleshooting them, I sourced the perfect power control module for the lamp to harness solar energy! I had the idea to make a lamp two years ago. The prototype made from clay broke three times, and that’s when I knew I had to go back to the drawing board. @bknakaa drew me a 3-D model based on the technical drawing I made in illustrator. I used my ceramic skills to make a bucket hat based on dimensions from a light. by @nov31.wip

This is the result from sculpture 101 @artslettersandnumbers. In a response to the prompt of REFUGE, I interpreted it through the feeling of joyful connection and the ability to listen. As a person in their 20’s without a home to call my own, I sat with this idea of how refuge can transcend the physical needs of food and shelter. If Refugees could go for days without eating, then what are those invisible forces keeping them on this earth to survive? If radical action is first cultivated within, then what can I do to cultivate our community to bring healing? Simply to LISTEN to your community and help them feel heard may be the first step to change on a small scale, and let this healing naturally ripple out to countries with war and genocide. I was inspired by my Uncle Wey, who broke bread with families in the holy land, and spent time to listen to their stories of organized peaceful resistance. This is an act of resistance to go listen intently and hear about radical perspectives that subvert the depressing narratives that the news tells us. One of my favorite ceramic artists Roberto Lugo inspired the concept to hold space for opposing political identities to come together and feel safe to speak and be heard. I need gentrifiers to invite the voices of those who grew up in this neighborhood into their spaces and have intimate conversations about their struggles and maybe even how they’ve built their anti-fragile spirits to grow from these moments. We’re all inundated with mindless chatter, but we still need to deepen our listening on so many levels.

My challenges with this prompt were greater than ever due to the quick 6 -day turnaround. My initial idea filled me full of doubt and I actually scrapped it on the penultimate day. Next time I want see it through with more commitment. With 24 hrs to go, I pulled this off with scraps found around the studio and the help of Craig’s handiwork. The final day I got to show it to my beloved friends and the ticking clock stopped as I was surrounded by their laughter and soft orange light. Thank you for this opportunity to make space for radical thought and to help my soul burn bright. by @nov31.wip

collaborative calligraphy exercise with Sina at the craft 101 residency. Our goal was to start with a Persian word in my case resliliency; to void its meaning by using "dots". I chose to draw an abstracted spine bent to represent flexibility. To me resilience is to survive, but it's championed by antifragility. In other words, to be antifragile is to approach hardships with an adaptable mindset in order to overcome it rather than simply survive.

The three following sculptures with wood table backgrounds collaborative works with others in the program not my work. by @nov31.wip
