Every thread in this tartan is a code: it memorializes roughly 2,500 people executed as witches in Scotland between 1563 and 1736.

The “Witches of Scotland” tartan was designed by the campaign group of the same name, which seeks legal pardons and a national memorial, and was registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans in early 2025. The Scottish government issued a formal apology on March 8, 2022, and the Church of Scotland also apologized for its historic role in the witch hunts.

The design is packed with symbolism. Black stands for dark times, grey for the ashes of victims, red for blood, and pink for the tape once used to bind legal papers. The thinner lines are either 15 or 17 threads wide: the sums of the digits in 1563, the year the Witchcraft Act was passed, and 1736, the year it was repealed. The campaign also points to the 173 years the act was in force.

The Witchcraft Act came three years after Scotland’s parliament declared Protestantism the official religion. Data from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft suggests 3,837 people were accused, with around 2,500 executed. Most were women. In many cases, a “witch pricker” was brought in to search the accused for a “mark of the devil,” often a scar, mole, wart, or birthmark, which shows how ordinary features of the body could be treated as evidence.

Campaigners studied similar memorials in other countries, including the Salem Witch Trials Memorial in Massachusetts and the Steilneset Memorial in northern Norway, while working toward a national memorial in Scotland. Because many of those persecuted were accused rather than convicted, they argue, a pardon can’t reach everyone, which is why an apology and formal recognition matter.

A piece of cloth can’t undo what happened, but it can make sure the dates, and the people, aren’t forgotten.
