They say a picture can tell a thousand stories. This is one of those pictures.
This shot taken by Normski captured me attending one of the first Hip Hop shows I ever witnessed. I had no money, but I had every intention of getting in. I just so happened to see my favourite group having their picture taken as I pulled up. I was just a super Rap nerd fan who just wanted to get near them. These guys were responsible for the most audacious, raw, revolutionary music I have ever heard. Public Enemy are pioneers, architects of sound who opened my mind. They are Cornerstones of the culture that raised me.
The show was incredible. The way their DJ, Terminator X moved the crowd, cut up the records, and was the backbone of the show inspired me. This was the night I realised my calling to be a DJ. For me, this was the where it all started moment and it’s been an incredible nonstop journey ever since,
This shot taken by a legendary UK photographer captured a pioneering Rap group in their prime, my arrival moment as DJ, and years later it has inspired another collective of creatives to put together a theatrical show.
Recently I attended the Monolithic theatre where I witnessed a performance based on the very same photo by Normski that I appear in. The play is called ‘Manchester Girl’. It was written by @karlamsweet , directed by legendary Director @jakenava and performed by @steviegambles
A story was created based on the photo, and it was performed with the utmost compassionate integrity. It was a powerfully emotional, mind blowing experience. I didn’t even know something like this could be done.
