India is projected to remain the world’s fastest-growing major economy in 2026, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) raising its growth forecast to 7% in its latest World Economic Outlook released on October 13.

The revised forecast marks a 0.6 percentage-point increase from the IMF’s July estimate of 6.4% for the 2026–27 financial year. The upgrade reflects stronger-than-expected economic momentum, supported by robust domestic demand and a resilient services sector. India’s growth is also projected at 7% in 2027–28.

India’s projected growth is significantly higher than that of other major economies. China is expected to grow by 4.5% in 2026, while the United States is forecast to expand by 2.3%. Among European economies, Spain is projected to grow by 2.5%, while Germany and the United Kingdom are both expected to record 1.3% growth. Japan’s economy is forecast to expand by just 0.7%.

The IMF has projected global economic growth of 3.1% in 2026, slightly higher than its previous estimate of 3%. However, it has warned that the global economy faces significant risks from geopolitical conflicts, elevated energy prices, rising public debt and uncertainty surrounding the profitability of investments in artificial intelligence.

Higher crude oil prices are a particular concern for India, which relies heavily on imported oil. A prolonged rise in energy costs could put pressure on inflation, the trade balance and household spending.

Despite these risks, the IMF’s upward revision signals confidence in India’s near-term economic momentum, even as growth remains uneven across the world.

In July 2024, Liz and David Roberts took their son into the Whittington Hospital in north London, with a stomach ache. Finlay Roberts spent nine hours in the busy, under-staffed emergency department. Most of that time was spent in a corridor. Finlay was sent home at around 1am, but hours later his mother found him in the bed next to her, not breathing. The coroner said that different hospital care that night would have given Finlay “a chance” of survival.

A spokesperson from Whittington Hospital, said “Whittington Health NHS Trust, like many NHS organisations across the country, continues to experience periods of exceptional demand across urgent and emergency care services. At times when demand exceeds available capacity, some patients may receive care in temporary clinical areas, including corridor spaces. We recognise that this is not the standard of care that patients, families or staff expect, and we understand the concerns that such circumstances raise. The Trust extends its sincere condolences to Finlay’s family.”
