a year agoI enjoyed this one, and yes it is true. I think that it is just as you say, things “become” ok because the repetition in occurrence is what results in them being normalized. While yes it is true that each individual person defines what normal is to them, I do also believe that there are objective normalities as well. For example (as random as this sounds), if we saw someone eating cereal with a fork… the majority would view this as abnormal (since repetition taught us that such a meal is to be consumed with a spoon). But playing off that concept (of utensils)… that is an example to me of something that has a gray area per say. I think that the creation of utensils is a natural advancement in the sense that eventually human beings would have developed tools to help assist them in the creation/consumption of meals But!… it is unnatural in the sense that human would have used natural materials that were accessible to them such as wood, stones, and heavy metals to do so. The unnatural aspect to that is how we package utensils and they need to be bought using money. Humans are social beings and the concept of trading is what money replaced. Back then it was, I run a vineyard and you run an apple orchard. I will trade you X amount of grapes for X amount of apples. Money was not involved. Currency always existed, but it was determined by the individual. Now with money, an outside entity determines how much each denomination is worth. We simply got what we needed by coming across it, creating it, or trading with others that had it. Money now eliminates this concept as there is no need for me to hit up my friend at the apple orchard as I can go directly to the store to purchase what I need (thus cutting him out). Oh this one is really layered and I think you did a great job at showing how layered it is! A good way I think of it is natural is technically the “true norm” (what normalcy was prior to all of the repetition). Whereas normal is not necessarily natural (it has just been adopted by society over time as a result of acceptance via word of mouth and/or monkey see monkey do - so we confuse acceptance with naturality). It’s deep! 😃💯
