Every course designer builds their distances based on 4 yards = 1 stride.
Therefore as riders we must calibrate our horses stride length to be 4 yards, which will enable them to meet distances well; but it is important to do this early on to be able to jump out of a rhythm and not interfere on the last few strides.
If not, you risk having to chase down a distance and flattening the canter - or chipping in, leading to an uncomfortable jump.
