Welcome to THE BACKROOMS! We let Ollie (who is 8) choose his costume every Halloween. He seen the Backrooms movie? No. Has he seen the online series? Nah. Does he think it is the absolute coolest story of the year and that The Bacteria monster was the ULTIMATE costume choice? YES ABSOLUTELY. Me and @matpatgt backed him up as usual, this time going as an ASync researcher and... a wall, respectively. Also just wanted to call out that I gained TWO new crafting skills this year: wallpapering wrapping paper onto cardboard, and sewing 196 pipe cleaners into spandex. These will clearly serve me into the future.
Oh Ma, what is this Maya? I came to see you, but you were hidden beneath the depths of the earth, flowers & offerings making an abode above & around you. I wanted to see you, I was craving for a glimpse that would shake the earth beneath me, but in these sacred places they're always angry Ma, they're grabbing people by the arms and flicking them around like objects, how many here truly love you? It seems to me that fear smells stronger than faith here. But then I remembered our discussion at dinner yesterday - you are the one that fulfils desire. You are the embodiment of desire & fulfilment itself. I didn't come to ask for a desire of mine to be blessed, you have already taken my desires very seriously. For years, i've been trying to get it right. The blade of my clarity has been sharpened by the suffering of having to look at myself. I've been putting in the blood, sweat and tears into becoming a 'better person'. Who knows it better than you Ma? Practice this, study that, reflect on this, observe that. But today I pause at desire. The ones I've had and the ones I still have. I see that our desires can either pave the path for the kind of world we wish to create or push us into a whole we cant get out of. I see your Divine grace embodied in my desires, in the women who trust me and love me, in friendship, in the animals who bless me, in the people who welcome me into their homes and feed me like a baby, in the eyes of my daughter, in the love of my parents, in the fragrance of flowers, in the arms of my lover. Hasn't all of this been birthed in my mind and body first? It was you, wasn't it? Living your own desires through me? I wish I saw you more closely today, I wish they gave us time, I wish there wasn't a need to rush, but I promise you I'm still paying attention. I'm looking at you in my life, because YOU are always present. You are hidden but always there. You know my desires, you know where I'm going. Just keep showing me what I need to see, even when it seems hidden. And may my desires be of benefit not just to me and my loved ones but to all beings, everywhere. Jai Maa 🙏🌹

Photographs can capture the final moments of people, animals and landmarks before they disappear forever. From the last years of Keiko, the famous orca from Free Willy, to the collapse of Australia’s London Bridge and the destruction of the World Trade Center, these images preserve pieces of history that can never be recreated. Other photographs tell equally heartbreaking stories, including the extinction of the baiji dolphin, the death of beloved polar bear Knut and the gradual deterioration of the Titanic beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Each image serves as a reminder that even the most familiar things can disappear, leaving behind photographs as evidence that they once existed. 📸🕰️🥀
Dearest readers, I just wanted to share the dates for several events that I’ll be doing next month - talking about my books (and much else besides), in two of my favourite places in the world, with the brilliant Oriole Cullen, senior curator of fashion at the V&A. Our first event is at 7pm on Monday 9th November @vamuseum - and we’ll be discussing the intriguing links between fashion and espionage, and exploring the wartime heroism of Catherine Dior, Hardy Amies and Edward Molyneux (amongst others), as well as the secret relationship between of the SOE and the V&A. Next up will be two talks at the Fife Arms Festival of Fashion in beautiful Braemar, where Oriole and I will be in conversation about Coco Chanel and Scotland (on 13th November), and royal fashion (on 14th November). Meanwhile, I’ll be travelling to Aberdeenshire via Edinburgh, as I’m also doing a fundraising event for @smartworksscotland on 12th November with my friend @annagmurphy, the illustrious fashion director of the Times. I’ll be signing books at all three of these talks - and very much hope I might meet some of you there (please do say hello if you’re coming). But for now, I’m sending warm wishes, as always, and looking forward to returning to the V&A and Scotland next month…
thank you @sierracanyoncheerteam for the best 4 years
