Obesity doesn't change the shape of the human skeleton, but it dramatically changes the workload those bones carry. The same frame that supports a lighter body ends up bearing far greater force, and over years, that added strain leaves its mark on the joints. The math is striking. Orthopedic specialists estimate that for every extra pound of body weight, the knees absorb roughly four pounds of additional pressure with each step, and even more when climbing stairs. Carrying an extra 50 pounds, then, can translate to around 200 pounds of added force pounding through the knees every stride. That relentless loading falls hardest on the weight-bearing joints, the knees, hips, ankles, and lower spine. Over time, the consequences compound. The smooth cartilage cushioning the ends of bones wears down faster under the excess load, a leading driver of osteoarthritis, and studies find people with obesity are far more likely to eventually need a knee replacement. The strain doesn't stop at the joints, either. Extra abdominal weight shifts the body's center of gravity forward, straining the muscles and discs of the lower back and altering posture and gait. There's also a chemical dimension, as fat tissue releases inflammatory signals that can further accelerate joint breakdown beyond mechanical wear alone. Same bones, far greater strain, and genuinely striking to see laid out in an X-ray. If any of this raises personal health questions, a doctor or orthopedic specialist is the right person to talk to. I recently returned to Cambodia, where we’ve been building the @maddoxfoundation — a 100% locally led organization — since 2003. I’d like to share a little more about our story. The @maddoxfoundation started with an urgent mission: to clear the land of mines left over from years of conflict, enabling locals to live and farm on it again. Once the land was safe, the work took on new shape. Now, our rangers — recruited and trained locally — patrol the Samlaut forest against logging and poaching. Women support their families through sustainable beekeeping programs. Students from remote villages can stay at the Samlaut dormitory to finish high school. Our health center cares for mothers and young children.  All of this is led by the people who live in the community. Please consider following the work on @maddoxfoundation.
What a journey these last two years have been. From lifting the Super Cup and the Belgian Cup to becoming Belgian champions, and from unforgettable Champions League nights to the wonderful atmosphere at Jan Breydel, this chapter has given me so many moments that I will always look back on with pride. I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been part of this chapter.
