Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka will remain in Delhi’s Tihar Jail for two more days after a court extended their judicial custody on October 19. The two had initially been sent to five days of judicial custody following their detention over a protest at Jantar Mantar.

Das and Ranka were detained on October 13 after allegedly climbing over a locked gate to enter Jantar Mantar, which had recently been removed from the list of designated protest sites. They were protesting against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The CJP has raised concerns over the voter-roll revision, alleging irregularities that could affect voters. The Election Commission has defended the process, saying voters whose names have been wrongly deleted can re-enrol.

Delhi Police sought further custody, citing concerns that the leaders’ release could disturb public peace and tranquillity. However, their lawyer, Abhik Chimni, questioned the grounds for keeping them in custody, arguing that there was no FIR or pending investigation requiring further questioning in the matter. He described the detention as preventive and said the defence would pursue legal remedies.

The custody extension comes amid allegations by CJP that authorities deliberately delayed the leaders’ release. The party has also questioned the handling of the bail proceedings.

The case has intensified the dispute over access to Jantar Mantar, a prominent protest venue in the national capital, and the right to demonstrate against electoral decisions. Das and Ranka will remain in Tihar Jail while the proceedings continue.

Through my surfing journey a few things have been constant! Awesome community, amazing support, and a handful of brands that always work for me! From the early days I was always a @roxy fan (maybe the only rash guard I wore for a couple years😂). Clothes, swimsuits, wetsuits, my first dress for a school dance! Stoked to join the @roxy team! Thank you so much for the opportunity! Huge thank you to @aquaeastsurfshop for all the support! From day 1 you guys have supported me in my surfing - thank you for everything! @mikeysasser @shane_chaires and the whole crew! Let’s go!!!
