We visited the Palacio de Liria during the Design Leadership Network conference in Madrid. Commissioned in 1767 by the 3rd Duke of Berwick and designed in the neoclassical style by architect Ventura Rodríguez, it is widely considered Madrid’s most spectacular private palace.
The window treatments throughout the palace are absolutely stunning. The formal floor-to-ceiling curtains were tailored in luxurious fabrics—silks, damasks, and brocades—with some hinterwoven with gold thread. They’re held back with ornate rope tiebacks finished with elaborate fringe and tassels, and topped with elegant swags, jabots, and balloon shades. As a curtain workroom owner, I was genuinely in awe of the craftsmanship and the sheer scale of these treatments.
