Like I said in the video, there are pros and cons in either direction. Ultimately, you have to use your discernment and hopefully find the people most equipped to help you. I am not trained in Somatic Experiencing, so I guess I’m giving them a free commercial here, but I trust their education. All of the SEPs I’ve interacted with have been incredibly impressive. The three-year education is, in my opinion, far better equipped to address what actually ails people today, and I suspect it sets you up to be a far more effective practitioner. My concern with higher education is that it still exists within institutions that are themselves shaped by the elevation of intellect over intuition and felt-sense experience. The disease of modernity is our disconnection from the body. The depth psychology work of our forebears is incredibly difficult for most modern folks to engage with experientially because they are so disconnected from themselves that they lack the internal capacity for deep inner work. Their physiology will often limit how deeply they can go and how much of what they encounter they can actually integrate. For the general population, this means you have to do a considerable amount of work with their physiology just to prepare them for the deeper stuff. And in my experience, traditional schooling did very little to prepare me for this reality. This is why I view modalities like Somatic Experiencing as a far more effective way to begin working with people. A quick Google search says that SEPs need 216 contact hours of training (delivered across 6 to 8 modules, usually spread over 2.5 to 3 years), 12 hours of personal SE sessions and 18 credit hours of case consultations. So, far less of an hours requirement than licensed therapists are required to get. Anyway, there’s no wrong way to do it. Each person will find their way in their own time.
