My Dad passed away last week, peacefully, surrounded by family.
He was a fantastic Dad, who showed me unquestioning loyalty and support. It was so intrinsic to who he was-never showy or attention-seeking. Just how you were supposed to be towards the people you love.
He was also an unrelenting critical thinker and a lifelong advocate for good ideas that helped people. He believed that things could, and should, be better.
Through his relationship with my Mom, he showed us that men and women are coequals. That it’s about partnership, collaboration, and respect. He never bought into all that masculine BS.
He introduced me to comedy! Letting me listen to George Carlin on cassette tapes, watch Eddie Murphy on SNL, and always ready with an absurd or goofy joke. He really respected the intelligence behind great comedy.
In his last few months, I got to help him tuck in his ever-present button-down shirts and cinch his belt within an inch of his life. He got really gentle in his last few years, which is a great trajectory to have. Alfred 2.0.
It’s hard and it hurts. But, now that he’s gone, I somehow feel even closer to him. I love you, Dad.
